When you find the time has come for you to make a change from where you’re living, whether it be to a tiny first bungalow, upsizing to make room for a growing family or downsizing and looking for a different type of style such as a funky loft, you’re now going to have the opportunity when looking at places to make some green choices. Without going to the extent and expense of buying a totally eco-fantasy property, you can consider looking at some of these ideas when buying.
Think Location foremost.
- Ideally find a home that’s not far from public transportation.
- You can walk to parks, food shops and other amenities.
- Living close enough to your work, that you can consider taking public transit more. More urbanites are opting to selling their vehicle and use AutoShare when necessary.
Unless you’re a large family, consider buying a smaller property, reducing your carbon footprint. While family numbers have been shrinking, the average size of new homes in Canada has been growing every decade.You’ll save on costs from the purchase price to the monthly utility bills.
Consider buying a semi-detached, or attached home as you’ll automatically save money with energy costs, since you’re sharing an outside wall.
Look for lots of indoor natural light, so you’re not relying on lights on during the day.

Surrounding trees will help shade your home and keep it naturally cool
Lead-pipe plumbing eliminated
Rain barrels are being used by more urban homes for storing water for gardens and lawns.
When buying your next home, think eco-friendly, and then after you’ve moved in begin to add and improve your own “green” list!
